Know Your Role Rep Quick Reference

๐Ÿ“… Meeting Schedule

๐Ÿ“† Third Wednesday of Every Month

Executive Board meets at 3:05 PM. Representative Assembly follows at 3:45 PM. Attendance is a core responsibility of your role. If you cannot attend, your alternate should represent your building.

๐Ÿ“ž Key Contacts

โœ… Your Core Responsibilities

  • Attend monthly Representative Assembly meetings (3rd Wednesday)
  • Bring concerns from your building to GHTA leadership
  • Report back to your colleagues after each meeting
  • Refer members to the Grievance Committee when needed
  • Assist members during Weingarten situations
  • Help with building-level elections, dues, and coordination
  • Keep members informed about contract rights and union business
  • Encourage participation in union events and solidarity actions

๐Ÿ”ด Red on Wednesdays

As a rep, you lead by example. Wear red every Wednesday and encourage your colleagues to do the same. Solidarity is visible โ€” and it matters.

Member Advocacy How to Represent Your Colleagues

โš–๏ธ Weingarten Rights

If a member is called into a meeting that could lead to discipline, they have the right to have you present. As their rep, you can:

  • Request a brief recess to consult with the member privately
  • Ask clarifying questions during the meeting
  • Provide the member with information they may not have
  • Take notes on everything that is said

The member must invoke their Weingarten Rights โ€” it is not automatic. Make sure your colleagues know this before they ever need it.

๐Ÿ“‹ Grievance Process

When a member believes their contract rights have been violated:

  • Listen carefully โ€” do not promise outcomes
  • Document the complaint in writing immediately
  • Check the contract language that applies
  • Remember: must be filed within 90 days of the incident
  • Refer to the Grievance Committee before any formal filing
  • No grievance advances to Level II without committee authorization

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Communicating with Members

  • Check in with your members regularly โ€” don't wait for problems
  • After each Rep Assembly, share key updates with your building
  • Be approachable and visible โ€” members need to feel comfortable coming to you
  • Never share confidential member concerns with administration
  • When in doubt, escalate to an officer rather than guess

๐Ÿšซ Know Your Limits

  • You are a representative, not a lawyer โ€” refer legal questions to officers
  • Do not make promises about outcomes of grievances or discipline
  • Do not share member information without their explicit consent
  • GHTA members should not complain about other GHTA members to the Board of Education
  • If you're unsure, contact the President or Vice President immediately
