Public Records Request Tool

Ohio law โ€” no requirement to identify yourself Under ORC 149.43, a public records requester is not required to identify themselves or explain why they want the records. However, identifying as a union representative can sometimes expedite cooperation and signals that you know your rights. Use your judgment.

Ohio law โ€” your rights on format Under ORC 149.43(B)(6), you may request records in a specific format and the public office must provide them in that format if it can reasonably do so. Requesting electronic copies (PDF or email) is faster and harder to delay than requesting paper.

Additional Options

Strengthen the request.

Requires the district to provide an itemized log of any records withheld and the specific legal basis for each withholding. Strongly recommended โ€” it prevents vague blanket denials.
ORC 149.43 requires a response within a reasonable time. Including this language signals you know the law and are tracking the timeline.
